Twyford Waterworks Railway.
The Railway
A 2ft(600mm) railway was used to transport materials, chiefly
chalk and fuel to the lime kilns and coal for the boilers. Wagons of chalk
and fuel were hauled up the incline from the level of the main buildings to
the kilns by a hydraulic engine and winch.
Those loaded with chalk were unloaded
alongside whichever kiln was being charged at the time. If loaded with fuel
this could be emptied here or pushed manually (no locomotive of any type was
used on the railway) round to the stokeholes. Only the top part of the incline
remains. The hydraulic winding engine and winch are replacements by the Trust.
