Water

The water supply system 1903-1969.

The diagram opposite shows the water supply layout used by the steam pumping plant. Water was lifted by the well pumps. mounted 37m down the well, and delivered to the water softening tank where ‘lime water’ was added. Softened water was filtered and entered the clear water tank.
The clear water tank supplied the transfer pumps which delivered the water to the Twyford reservoir. Each triple expansion engine operated both a set of well pumps and a set of transfer pumps. The two steam engines had a pumping capacity of 11 000 m per day (2 million gallons per day), enough to flood Wembley stadium to a depth of 1.3 m every day!.
